Back in the mid-1980s, while at college, I was introduced to a Christian satire magazine called The Wittenburg Door. It was published, at that time, by Youth Specialties, one of the early publishers of youth ministry resources. (The Door was kind of a side project, separate from their youth ministry business). It was through subscribing to the Door that I got on Youth Specialties’ mailing list for their youth ministry stuff, which sparked my interest in such things, and eventually led to my becoming a volunteer youth worker.
The Door was published every couple of months (or so), and was notoriously late (you might get the February/March issue in November). It was known for poking fun at the church when the church did goofy things (which the church still does on a regular basis), but it also featured fairly serious articles and interviews as well.
One of my favorite issues to this day, from 1986, had a series of articles dealing directly or indirectly with the subject of doubt. During the next week or so I’m going to post a few of those scanned articles. This first one is from a writer named James Sennett.
